Understanding Sustainable Business

Yes, I am one of those college students who graduated in the middle of a pandemic. Over the next few weeks I will be reflecting on my studies and writing about my current research as I explore the sustainability and social impact space. Although things seem a bit bleak at times, I remain to be optimistic about the future. As someone who studied Global Capitalism and Sustainable Business this might be a bit surprising. The capitalist economy has allowed for great gains in society while also creating vast negative externalities that have abused people and the environment. So why am I optimistic you might be asking?

(Hi! This is me, Severine!)
(Hi! This is me, Severine!)

Over the past four years I have been asking the questions of what has created the space for negative externalities in capitalism and what can we, as consumers, businesses, governments, and corporations do about it? I have found some pretty interesting and promising proposals to these problems, but one fact continues to present itself which is that there is no one solution to these problems. Like most things in life there will be no quick fix, no magic pill that will resolve these human rights and environmental abuses. It is only through thoughtful and intentional work that these issues will begin to be resolved in time.

Over the next few weeks I will be writing about what I have studied at NYU while also talking with a number of industry experts about their work and impact to gain insight on what can be done to improve our current global situation. I hope that you will join me on this journey as we learn a bit more about what is happening in the sustainability and social impact space.

Best,

Severine
